Mezcalero Cocina Mexicana Information

Mezcalero Cocina Mexicana on 14th Street in Washington, DC is one of those spots that makes you want to linger over your meal, chat with friends, and maybe even plan your next visit before you’ve finished dessert. Tucked into the vibrant Union Market-14th Street neighborhood, this Mexican restaurant has built a solid reputation for delivering flavorful regional dishes and a lively dining experience that keeps locals coming back.

Stepping inside, the first thing you notice is the comfortable atmosphere - warm lighting, friendly chatter, and a mezcal and tequila‑focused bar that feels as much a part of the experience as the food itself. There’s a genuine neighborhood vibe here, where the bar fills up early with folks ordering margaritas and mezcal margaritas while the tables are packed with diners sampling items from the menu. The outdoor covered seating area is a nice touch when the weather allows, making it easy to enjoy conversations without the rush of a formal restaurant setting.

The menu strikes a great balance between familiar Mexican favorites and fun, slightly more adventurous offerings. Appetizers like Queso Fundido and Tostados de Tinga set the tone with bold flavors, and the ceviche mixto brings a refreshing seafood twist that pairs perfectly with one of their natural fresh waters or a classic cerveza. For mains, hearty choices like Chilaquiles or Mole Rojo feel comforting but deeply satisfying, and items such as the grilled octopus taco or chicken mole have been favorites among regulars for good reason. There’s also a fun selection of tortas and burritos, each layered with fresh ingredients and vibrant sauces that speak to traditional Mexican roots.

Service here tends to be warm and welcoming, with bartenders often praised for their knowledge about drinks and recommendations, and waitstaff that strike the right balance between attentive and relaxed. Many reviews mention the chill, social setting - music in the background and soccer games on TV - which makes it easy to settle in for a long lunch or dinner. While the place can feel a bit busy during peak hours and parking isn’t always the easiest, the overall experience is worth it, especially if you’re craving authentic Mexican flavors paired with a festive yet cozy environment.

What People's Say About Place

I enjoyed my experience here. The service is quick, yet somewhat hands off. I think our server really only took our order and checked in on us when he thought we wanted to order more food or drinks. The food is well flavored. The guacamole isn’t on the menu but you can order it as an appetizer. But then again it’s only mashed avocado, and doesn’t come with onions or tomatoes. The atmosphere is decent for the location in union market. This spot is in the running for my favorite Spanish spot in DC although the verdict is still out. I plan to return and try other dishes.

I tried this Mexican restaurant for the first time tonight and was really impressed! I ordered online for pick-up, but when I arrived, I noticed they had a nice covered outdoor seating area and plenty of indoor tables. Maybe next time I eat here. Mexican music was playing in the background, and there were a couple of large TVs showing a soccer game, which gave the place a fun atmosphere. They also have a decent-sized bar with a great selection of tequilas. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the prices were very reasonable. The food was absolutely delicious, and we’ll definitely be back! Highly recommend it.

The best place to come for great food. Great drinks great service. My favorite bartenders name Melody! Super knowledgeable and efficient. Never a bad time and never a dull moment. What’s my blink? Messi makes picture of margarita and Al Alfredo has the best hair and excellent customer service.

Always enjoy my experience here! Decided to try something other than their tacos, and I was not disappointed! Had the Camarones a la Diabla, and would definitely get it again The Hibiscus Margarita, Tamarind Margarita, chips & guac, & queso with tortillas were all tasty too. The service was good, the portions were decent, and the presentation was appealing. Pics shared are a few pages from the menu.

I stopped in after a hair cut after reading rave reviews. Though I came in thinking I'd order the chicken milanesa torta, I shifted when I saw the grilled octopus taco. Had grilled octopus and the chicken tinga taco with a pineapple margarita. Perfectly grilled octopus, so tender. Service was fast and Edgar makes a mean drink. The music wasn't too loud and I dug the lights being low. Will definitely return!

A true Mexican food gem! Mezcalero Comida Mexicana absolutely delivers when it comes to authentic Mexican flavors. I started with the molletes crispy, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying. Easily a 10/10 dish. Then we tried this amazing mixed platter (photo attached) with shrimp, beef, sausage, grilled veggies, Mexican rice, black beans, guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo. Everything was seasoned to perfection. The shrimp were juicy, the sausage had just the right amount of spice, and the rice tasted like home. The presentation was beautiful, the portions were generous, and the service was warm and friendly. If you’re craving real Mexican food made with love, this place is a must-visit. I’m already looking forward to going back!

LOVE!!! LoVE!! Love! every single taco ($3 each during HH) I've had, and I've had each of them. All of their food is delicious! Service is quick, professional, and the staff are pleasant. LOVE this place!

Great flavors with spatial and ample outdoor seating. Service is friendly/attentive and they have free chips and salsa to open any order over $4. They also have $6 margaritas during happy hour. We often go for their tacos and tortas - see their al pastor pictured is especially tasty! ig: @harshaeats
